CME Courses/Symposium

  • Frail Ederly Conference/Annual Meeting of MALTCP, August 2005, Columbia. Sponsored by MATLCP every August. Cosponsored with University of Missouri Department of Family and Community Medicine.
  • Provide medical student/resident/fellow stipends to attend conferences.

Best Practices Symposium, Section for Long-Term Care, Department of Health & Human Services

  • Multi-organizational group deals with variety of nursing home issues
  • Multiple stakeholder meetings help cultivate best practices in long term care statewide: state surveyors,
    MALTCP, home associations, ombudsman, home administrators, nursing directors, assisted living, local CMS representatives.
  • Discuss issues of concern to physicians in LTC (ethics consultations, Primaris and QIO development,
    University of Missouri School of Nursing Quality Indicator Project, survey issues, end of life in dementia
    patients, staff training needs).

Geriatric Physician Advocacy Initiative

  • Communicates with American Medical Directors Association on pertinent national-state issues.
  • Tracks bills in the Missouri legislature on long term care matters; urges members to write their representatives.

AMDA Representation

  • MALTCP members serve on AMDA Board of Directors, Public Policy committee, Strategic Planning
    Committee; act as liaison to other organizations; present at regional and national conferences.
  • MALTCP member works with the AMDA CPG committee which interacts with AMA and CMS to advocate for
    higher pay for nursing home visits.

Guidelines for End of Life Care in Long-Term Care Facilities

  • Multi-organizational task force sponsored by Missouri End of Life Coalition and Department of Health and
    Senior Services.
  • MALTCP assisting in development, writing and project implementation.
  • Developed project implemented in winter 2003 and spring 2004.
  • Surveyors, hospice and providers in-serviced.

FENCE (Furthering Education for Nurses Who Care for the Elderly)

  • Multi-organizational task force to develop an educational course for LPNs in long term care. Geriatric
    syndromes, pharmacology, management & communication issues, legal & ethical concerns, and administrative training are to be included.
  • Co-chaired by MALTCP member; several others involved in writing curriculum.
  • Expect implementation mid–2005.

Missouri Geriatric Society

  • Remains a separate entity, as the state chapter of the American Geriatric Society, but continue to cross-promote organizations, share educational opportunities.

Long-Term Links Newsletter

  • Thirteen consecutive years of quarterly publication for Missouri long-term care professionals, published with the
    Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Missouri School of Medicine.
  • Mailed to requested circulation of over 600.

Missouri Coalition for End of Life Care

  • MALTCP has been an important partner in developing the Guidelines for End of Life Care in Nursing Facilities
    in collaboration with the Missouri End of Life Coalition and representatives from nursings homes, hospice, and
    the state Department of Health and Senior Services. MALTCP members are faculty presenters for the training
    sessions for surveyors and providers.

  • Governor-appointed Advisory Board.
  • Chaired by Dr. Kerr, MALTCP president.
